PERIODONTOLOGY

Periodontitis is a bacterial condition that affects gums and supporting tissues of the tooth.

PeriodontologySigns of periodontitis:

  • Gum bleeding occurred spontaneously or while brushing
  • Mouth odor
  • Teeth movement
  • Abscesses at the gum level

The treatment for periodontitis is complex, consisting of removal of the causal factors.
Depending on the moment of occurrence, the disease can be cured completely or just stopped from progressing.

The first step requires a complete cleaning of the mouth, consisting of several recurrent professional scaling procedures and deep disinfection with chlorhexidine-based preparations.

For a successful treatment the patient’s cooperation is essential. He/she must understand the need to make regular visits to the dentist, at least once every 4-6 months, for scaling and sub-gingival curettage (the so called open field curettage). Besides, local application of anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial substances or oral administration of antibiotics.

The patient will be instructed to maintain oral hygiene by proper brushing, use of mouthwash, dental floss, interdental brushes.

In the second stage, the treatment may consist of local applications of anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, periodontal surgeries (sub-gingival curettage, gingivectomies, flap surgeries, bone additions), endodontic treatment and teeth immobilization by prosthetic works made of biocompatible material, such as zirconium supported ceramic.

In the third stage when the periodontal condition is in an advanced stage, one recommends the extraction of mobile teeth and their replacement with implants, the prosthesis process taking place in this case on fixed dental works.

Periodontitis is a condition that can be prevented with pretty much ease. All you have to do is impose on yourself just a few daily care rules and go to medical checkups on a regular basis.
